Hockey’s trilogy: Howe, Orr, & Gretzky
Shirt Sam’s Pick:
Mr. Hockey: My Story By Gordie Howe, with Forward by Bobby Orr. Paperback. $8.21 Prime eligible. Other formats available. “I read the opening line, and I was hooked,” Shirt Sam said. “It reads ‘I love the feel of the puck on my stick.‘ If you love this game, how does that not resonate? Mr. Howe is hockey’s version of Arnold Palmer. It’s an interesting read, and also reminds us of the humble roots of our sport’s greatest player. As expensive as hockey has become, it’s important to remember that, at it’s core, hockey is a blue collar game.” https://amzn.to/2qiEfPY
Zoe Bear’s Pick:
Orr: My Story By Bobby Orr. Paperback. $11.06 Prime eligible. Other Formats available. If Gordie Howe is our Arnold Palmer, Bobby Orr may be Jack Nicholas. For our money, Bobby Orr revolutionized the game. Defensemen could now be a potent part of a team’s offense, thanks to Number 4. Even now, 40-plus years later, his highlight reels are like no other. Beyond the rink, he remains hockey’s quintessential gentleman. No player’s professional development can be considered complete without reading Mr. Orr’s book.
99 Gretzky: His Game, His Story By Al Strachan. Paperback. $15.50. Prime eligible. Other formats available. After Mr. Howe and Mr. Orr, we had to complete the trifecta. From Amazon: “From the time Wayne Gretzky began playing organized hockey at the age of six, his genius was evident. He scored one goal in his first season and 378 in his fifth. With the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s and later with the Los Angeles Kings, he was virtually unstoppable. He won nine Hart trophies as the leading scorer, and four Stanley Cups. Later, with the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, he continued to show leadership, finesse, and grace both on and off the ice.”
We are giving bonus points for any player reading all three this summer. Let us know what you think. Did you enjoy them? Why or why not? Hockey’s trilogy: Howe, Orr, & Gretzky is the best place to start your summer reading.
11 Habits of Happy and Positive Sports Parents. By Janis Meredith. Paperback. $7.99 Prime eligible.
